Should You Sharpen a Tungsten Chainsaw Chain? Understanding How Tungsten Differs from Steel

One of the most common questions we hear at Tufozi is:

"How long will a tungsten chain last, and do I ever need to sharpen it?"

The answer depends on how and where you use it.

Many people expect a tungsten chain to last indefinitely without maintenance, but it's important to understand what tungsten is designed to do and how it performs compared to a traditional steel chain.

How Long Does a Tungsten Chain Last?

In most situations, a GoldStrike™ Tungsten Chain will deliver the equivalent cutting life of around 10 sharpenings of a standard steel chain.

Depending on the timber and cutting conditions, you may achieve anywhere from 5 to 15 steel-chain sharpenings' worth of cutting life before replacement or sharpening becomes necessary.

Several factors affect chain life, including:

  • The type of timber you're cutting
  • How clean the wood is
  • Dirt, sand, grit or mud embedded in the bark
  • Timber cut near roadsides or forest edges
  • Burnt timber containing charcoal
  • Contaminated timber such as railway sleepers

Even timber that appears clean can contain abrasive materials that dramatically increase wear.

Why Is Tungsten Different?

Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials available for cutting applications. It stays sharp significantly longer than standard steel and also generates less heat because it transfers heat less readily.

This means you spend more time cutting and less time stopping to sharpen.

Most GoldStrike™ Tungsten Chains are supplied in a semi-chisel profile, as this offers an excellent balance of safety, durability and long edge life. Full-chisel versions are also available for users who prefer a more aggressive cutting profile.

What Happens When a Tungsten Chain Becomes Blunt?

Unlike a steel chain, a tungsten chain often continues cutting even after the cutting edge has worn.

Eventually, the tungsten-tipped cutters may begin to break away, often at the steel beneath the carbide tip. While this may seem unusual, it is a normal wear characteristic rather than a manufacturing defect.

Understanding this behaviour helps you get the maximum value from your chain.

Option 1: Replace Rather Than Sharpen

Many users simply continue using their GoldStrike™ chain until enough cutters have worn away that cutting performance begins to decline.

Once the chain starts producing noticeable heat and several cutters are missing, it's usually time to replace it.

For many users, replacing the chain is more economical than spending time repeatedly sharpening conventional steel chains.

For example:

  • Professional sharpening: $15+ each
  • 10 sharpenings of a steel chain: $150

A steel chain plus repeated sharpening can quickly exceed the cost of a tungsten chain, while requiring considerably more downtime.

Option 2: Sharpen the Tungsten Chain

Sharpening is recommended for users regularly cutting extremely abrasive materials such as:

  • Ironbark
  • Railway sleepers
  • Timber containing silica or sand
  • Extremely hard Australian hardwoods

Using a diamond grinding disc and a quality bench sharpener, you can lightly regrind the tungsten cutting edge.

For best results:

  • Remove only a small amount of material.
  • Reduce the vertical angle slightly to improve edge life.
  • Sharpen before excessive wear occurs.

Leaving the chain too long without maintenance may result in cutters breaking away unnecessarily.

Which Method Is Right for You?

There isn't a single correct approach.

Some users prefer to replace the chain after its full service life and never spend time sharpening.

Others working in extremely demanding environments choose to sharpen periodically to maximise chain life.

The best choice depends on the timber you cut, how often you use your saw and the balance between your time and operating costs.
